Yay for our first non-family visitor! I was so excited that Kit was able to come to to visit last week- we had an AMAZING time!!! It was so much fun exploring, eating, and shopping our way through NJ and Philly! So, here is our visit in a nutshell... we ate a lot, so there are lots of food pictures : )
Thursday we went to the outlets up in NY, which are really great btw (lulu lemon, Tory Burch, Joes, Barneys, etc etc), and we wanted some chick fil a on the way home. So, the chick fil a we found was in a mall which at first we weren't thrilled about not being able to go through the drive through. However, upon entrance to the mall, we stumbled upon a self serve TCBY. AMAZING!!! After hearing Sarah Beth rave about the one she found in SC, we had to make a stop. It didn't disappoint.
Dinner at the Pop Shop post outlets...deliciousness!!! Amazing grilled cheese, tomato soup, french fries, and this ham/grain mustard/cheese/apple sandwich. Pop Shop was featured on Bobby Flay's Showdown a couple years ago for one of their grilled cheese sandwiches, and needless to say, every sandwich I've had there has been amazing! We were so full we couldn't even take advantage of the 1/2 price shakes that night...a shame since they were voted best shake by Philly Mag last year. Oh well, next time. I guess we can't eat everything in one trip.
After me and my workout buddy hit the gym Friday (classes go by so much faster with a friend!), we walked into town for lunch. We hit up The Apron, which was voted to have South Jersey's best chicken salad. It was yummy!! The weather was perfect to eat outside, and we thoroughly enjoyed walking around our cute Haddonfield's downtown.
Dinner that night was at The British Chip Shop. Amazing fish & chips, cottage pie, sponge cake- this place is so cool! Kit gave it her stamp of approval as she is the expert after spending a semester in London : ) We finished off the night with a lavender shortbread cookie and a cup of pg tips tea. Can't beat that!
Saturday morning we went into Philly, and our first stop was for breakfast at Federal Donuts. They just opened this second location that week, and their other location has always gotten rave reviews. The first day they opened they sold out of donuts by 10:30!! They serve donuts and fried chicken (only after 11), which is a very random combination...I'll be back to try the fried chicken. We split the hot strawberry fennel, hot vanilla spice, and the butter pecan donuts. We decided our fav were the hot of the presses ones and the strawberry fennel stole the prize. Great way to start the day!
After shopping and walking around town a while, we went to get an iconic philly cheesesteak from Jim's Steaks. PHENOMENAL!!! Michael was on call and was very disappointed he missed out. We'll be returning soon don't worry. We ate and conquered here. Cleaned our plates. It was worth the 30 minutes in line! There are a million places to get cheesesteaks here, but there are 4 main ones- Tony Lukes, Geno's, Pat's, and Jim's. I'll be trying the others, but I think Jim's will be hard to beat. Oh and apparently the 'traditional' philly is done with cheez wiz- we thought that was gross and opted for other cheese options...cheez whiz, really??
Had to throw in some of the historical stuff.
We tried to go to the iconic John's Water Ice (aka italian ice- they call it water ice up here for some weird reason b/c there are tons of italians), but it was strangely closed. After some investigation, we realized they only open seasonly. Bummer. So, we got some water ice back in Jersey. Tried out a new place- Primo's Water Ice, and it was every bit of delicious! For $1.50 you can get a good size cup so you can't beat the price!!!
And to top off our food tour that day, we got desserts from McMillan's bakery for the night. The bakery is like a step back into time- it is a 3rd generation italian bakery, and it opened in 1939. The donut you see is the item that put them on the map (for good reason!). It's hard to resist a good sweet!
So that about sums up our visit...lots of fun times, laughs, shopping, eating, and sightseeing. Thank you for visiting Kit, I had a blast!!! So sad to see you go : ( Love you!! It's fun to have a taste of home up here and looking forward to a return trip! I'm on the hunt for new eateries haha. And anyone else who wants a food tour of Philly, you're welcome to visit anytime : ) We only hit the tip of the iceberg.
